LANDMARK ENERGY EFFICIENT DEVELOPMENT FOR SCORESBY
A new commercial building in a Koonung industrial estate will deliver energy and water savings of up to 60 per cent with the help of a Bracks Government initiative, local Member for Koonung Province Helen Buckingham said today.
The State Government will commit more than $20,000 through the Commercial Office Building Energy Innovation Initiative (COBEII) to enable Bordo to incorporate energy-saving measures in the design of its new headquarters at Central Industry Park in Scoresby.
“Commercial buildings account for around 12 per cent of Victoria’s greenhouse gas emissions,” said Ms Buckingham.
COBEII is an initiative of the Victorian Greenhouse Strategy run by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Victoria. It aims to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions generated by commercial buildings.
“It works with the developers in the early design stages of buildings to ensure the end result is a healthier and more comfortable workplace, that is cheaper to operate and better for the environment,” said Ms Buckingham.
“The best way to create energy efficient buildings is to get the design right at the beginning. By doing this, Bordo will slash its building’s energy bill by up to 60 per cent.”
A preliminary assessment indicates that the design will achieve a 5 Star Green Star rating and it has been registered with the Green Building Council of Australia for certification.
“Bordo is leading by example in terms of the environmental performance of buildings within industrial estates,” said Mrs Buckingham.
Sustainable solutions featured in the office design include:
• natural ventilation;
• improved roof insulation;
• solar domestic hot water installation;
• low energy lighting and daylight dimming controls;
• sustainable timber, ‘green’ concrete and recycled steel;
• implementation of a waste management plan; and
• rainwater tank to supply landscape irrigation and toilet flushing.
Ms Buckingham said Victorians are demanding higher office standards and COBEII is stimulating greater investment in high-quality, energy efficient commercial property.
