Bordo’s Commitment to a Greener Future

Bordo International is proud to partner with World Vision Australia in a groundbreaking worldwide initiative to restore 1 billion hectares of degraded land. This effort is powered by Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), a transformative technique that not only revitalises ecosystems but also brings hope and prosperity to communities while helping to combat climate change.

Our Vision for Change

By regenerating vast landscapes, we can remove up to 25% of carbon from the atmosphere, prevent species loss, and lift millions out of extreme poverty. FMNR, pioneered by Australian agronomist Tony Rinaudo AM, harnesses the potential of the “Underground Forest”, a network of tree roots that, when managed properly, can quickly regenerate forests without the need for additional water — just simple tools like a knife and saw.

Bordo’s Role in Global Restoration

World Vision has committed to restoring one billion hectares of land using FMNR, beginning with initiatives in Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Zambia. Bordo International is proud to play a valuable role in this global mission by committing to a five-year partnership that focuses on the restoration efforts in Zambia.

Why FMNR is a Game Changer

Environmental Impact

- Carbon Sequestration: FMNR is a powerful tool in reducing atmospheric carbon, as trees naturally absorb carbon dioxide during their growth, playing a critical role in mitigating climate change.

- Biodiversity Enhancement: By restoring vegetation, FMNR helps rebuild ecosystems, promoting the return of wildlife and plant species that have been lost due to deforestation.

- Soil Restoration: Trees contribute to soil health by reducing erosion, improving water retention, and enriching the soil with organic matter.

Socioeconomic Benefits

FMNR empowers farmers by giving them the tools and knowledge to manage their land effectively. This empowerment leads to enhanced agricultural productivity, as trees provide shade, lower soil temperatures, and support crop growth. Additionally, the regenerated forests offer valuable resources such as firewood and fodder, essential for the livelihoods of subsistence farmers.

Cost-Effectiveness

FMNR is not only effective but also highly cost-efficient—up to 36 times cheaper per hectare than traditional tree planting methods. With each tree capable of absorbing up to 10kg of carbon dioxide annually, FMNR stands as a vital strategy in our fight against climate change.

Scalability

The FMNR method is highly scalable and adaptable across diverse regions and climates. It has already been successfully implemented in various countries, particularly in Africa and Asia, leading to the restoration of millions of hectares of land.

Community Empowerment

A cornerstone of FMNRs success is its ability to empower local communities. By training farmers to manage their land, FMNR fosters a deep sense of ownership and responsibility. This community-led approach ensures long-term sustainability and success in restoration efforts.

Bordo is committed to supporting sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the planet. Through our partnership with World Vision, we are working towards a greener, more equitable future for all.
